Advanced module: Trauma-sensitive communication

Start: 16.06.2026 End: 17.06.2026 Cost: join for

This two-day advanced module focuses on deepening professional communication skills in the context of anti-racism counseling. The workshop is aimed at anti-racism and anti-discrimination counselors (especially those from community settings) who already have practical experience in supporting individuals facing discrimination.

The focus is on understanding the situation of (acutely) traumatized individuals: A fundamental understanding is developed of how trauma manifests itself in counseling situations, in contrast to other psychological stressors. The emphasis is on recognizing physical and emotional stress reactions as well as signs of secondary victimization in conversation and, where appropriate, addressing them through psychoeducation.

At the same time, participants strengthen their professional stance: Through self-reflection, they learn strategies for self-regulation to protect their own mental health and prevent secondary traumatization. Practical exercises teach participants how to establish safety and orientation in a counseling setting, consider triggers, and maintain clear boundaries within their role. The aim is to develop a realistic self-assessment of one's own capabilities and limitations in the counseling context. The development of referral strategies is also part of the module.

The workshop is designed to be participatory and practical: Using case studies, reflection exercises and guided discussions, it strengthens confidence in dealing with traumatized people seeking advice – empowering, resource-oriented and on equal terms.

A particular focus will be on the recognizability of racism and its normalization in society. Note: Participation in…
